Fun French

Learn more about the French language!

Even if youve studied French intensively in your home country or spent many years living in France, there are still some expressions that emerge every so often to confound the language learner! Its the case in all the languages of the world, as phrases constantly come into being, go in and out of fashion, and then eventually become extinct.

Take, for instance the expression mtro, boulot, dodo to describe the everyday hustle and bustle of big city working life. This idiomatic French expression incorporates informal and infantile rhyme to convey the idea of living only to work. If youre taking a French course France, you might have come across this phrase in relation to life in Paris for many French and foreigners caught up in a daily commute to work. Mtro is the underground or subway system form of transportation to the office, boulot is a slang word for work, and dodo is baby talk for sleeping.

Studying at a French course Lyon or a French course Montreux will expose any student of the French language to real, everyday, practical French.

If youre interested in learning more colloquialisms and phrases, an excellent method for practise and gaining exposure to this language is by reading French comic books. Known as a bande dessine or BD for short, in France the comic book is regarded as the neuvime art and they are taken quite seriously. There are BDs for all tastes, personalities and even professions, and its equally possible to find an adventure bande dessine as it is to find one about the everyday exploits of bureaucrats, professors, firemen or police.

Learning French successfully requires dedication and expert tuition, so no nipping off to an English summer camp or a German course Switzerland just to change the topic! However, there are a lot of enjoyable ways to learn and practise. Have fun with your French!
